The victim told Washington Township Police that the accountant was hired to help the victim file a tax amendment in July 2021, authorities said.
The victim gave the accountant the amendment fee of $3,100 but after following up learned that the accountant never filed the amendment and instead pocketed the money, police say.
The accountant — a Long Valley man whose name was not released — was charged with theft by deception and is scheduled to appear in Morris County Superior Court.
